Miniature Scale & Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question you would like answered?  Use the form below to submit a question about miniature scale or similar subject.

Question:  What is 1/12 miniature scale?
The most common scale used today for dollhouses and dollhouse miniatures is 1" scale (also known as 1:12 scale).  One inch scale is easy to understand when you think of a 6' tall man (or 72 inches).  If you were to create a one inch (or 1:12) scale replica of this tall gentleman, he would measure 6" in 1:12 scale.

Question:  "Will Barbie and her friends like to move in to a 1:12 (one inch scale) or 1:24 (half inch scale) dollhouse?"

I've heard this question a few times and wish to clarify that barbie will most definitely not blend in with a dollhouse.  Barbie is not designed as a scale miniature.  What scale is she?  Not sure...presumably 'Barbie scale' as she seems to have her own proportions which cannot be exacted in inches, centimeters or any other common method of measurement!

Question:  "What is half scale?"
Every 1/2" measured by the miniature craftsman or artist is basically a miniature creation or replica of twelve inches ( or one foot)  in our physical real life world!   A replica of the 6' tall man made in the 1/2" scale would measure just 3"tall.  Half inch scale is also commonly referred to by miniaturists as 1:24 (or 1/24) scale.
